Best Practices for Organizing Fonts by Ted LoCascio

If you decide to organize fonts manually, consider implementing a system that works best with the way you use your fonts.

The font folders in Mac OSX will recognize fonts that are placed in subfolders. Therefore, you can create a library system using labeled folders. Here are some examples of systems you could use:

1. Alphabetically by family name. For a lot of creative professionals, this is the easiest way to organize fonts. Depending on how many fonts you're working with, you may choose to create a subfolder for each letter of the alphabet, or use letter groupings, such as A-E, F-H, and so on.

2. By classification. Some may choose to label font subfolders according to their type, such as serif, sans serif, script, handwriting, etc.

3. By job name or number. If your production workflow already has a labeling system implemented, why not use the same method to organize your font library? This method may help you identify where each font came from. However, it can also create duplicate problems.

4. By client. Design agencies may want to consider setting up subfolders by client name. However, this method may also lead to duplicate problems.
