I know I've seen a lot of horror stories on the Web in the past few days regarding the latest update to the iPhone; people couldn't download the updates, couldn't get new phones, couldn't activate, MobileMe was sluggish, the iPhone drank the last beer in the fridge, etc. But somehow I managed to have a pleasant experience, so I figured I'd share my non-horror tale.
Mind you, several user errors kept me from even attempting much in the way of an upgrade on Thursday; I had flight delays and was stuck in an airport most of the day, only to discover that I'd brought along a dock/FireWire cable (okay for charging the phone, not okay for updating it). I got my iTunes updated in the airport, and figured I'd set about to do the software/firmware update the next day.
Once I bought the proper cable (now meaning I must have about ten of them, sigh), I went to my hotel room, plugged it in, and it began its backup and update process, adding in all of the apps I'd queued up on Thursday. I poked around the Web to see what I'd need to do for MobileMe while that was going on, and it finished quickly and painlessly - no lost data, no problems. I played around with the apps (see my next review for info there) and put in all of my user names and such. Mind you, I have not upgraded the phone yet; since I'm across the country I figured I'd be better off waiting until I was home for that. But as far as the upgrade and MobileMe migration went, not every tale has a sad ending...
